PARASHAS CHUKAS: A YOKE, NOT A BURDEN

“ויקחו אליך פרה אדמה תמימה, אשר אין בה מום, אשר לא עלה עליה עול”. רש”י: לא עלה עליה עול – כשם שפרקו מעליהם עול שמים. (יט, ב)

“They should bring you a pure red cow, which has no defects, which never had a yoke upon it.” (Bamidbar 19:2) Rashi: “Just as they [the Jewish people] threw off the yoke of Heaven.”

The comparison of the yoke of Heaven to the yoke of the parah adumah can be easily misconstrued. The yoke of a cow restricts it against its will. Is the yoke of Heaven an unpleasant burden forced upon our shoulders? Must we perform mitzvos with zero personal connection, like robots following commands?

That’s not what it means to bear a yoke. In Krias Shema, immediately upon accepting the yoke of Heaven, we speak about the mitzvah to love Hashem. Bearing the yoke of Heaven goes hand in hand with loving Hashem. To bear Hashem’s yoke, we have to love Him and have a relationship with Him – not just follow orders.

A yoke isn’t a burden. It’s something above you that you accept upon yourself and make your number one priority. If you make another person your yoke, you place him above your personal preferences and considerations. If you accept the yoke of Torah, you make Torah the supreme concern in your life. It’s something above you that you strive to connect to, and make the guiding force in your life. That’s why accepting the yoke of Heaven is an act of love – making Hashem your number one priority, to the extent that you’re willing to give your life for Him.

To accept a yoke, you have to recognize that it’s above you. If the parah adumah carries a blanket for its own warmth, that doesn’t disqualify it, because it’s just acting out of its own interest. It’s not subjugating itself to something above.

That’s the more subtle understanding of prikas ohl – casting off the yoke of Heaven. It doesn’t have to mean rejecting halachic observance, chas v’shalom. A person could live a very religious lifestyle, but never really do it for the Boss. If his personal considerations outweigh what Hashem wants from him, that’s also prikas ohl, because nothing is above him. That’s the comparison between the yoke of Heaven and the yoke of the parah adumah.

We can work on accepting the yoke of Heaven through a small daily kaboloh. It could be in the realm of Torah, tefillah, chesed, or any number of areas. If you make this project your absolute focus for a few minutes every day, above all other considerations, you’ll start to feel the reality of connecting to something above you. It will be a yoke, instead of just another item on your to-do list. That’s the first step to accepting the yoke of Heaven.
